LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

“There’s nothing better than finding your special someone,” American Television journalist Nora O’Donnell commented with a smile at the end of Steve Hartman’s story on CBS News, Friday March 5, 2021.

Who was Nora referring to? And why? Nora was speaking about John Schultz and Joy Mauro-Knowlton. Both people have been married twice and widowed twice. But they were both determined to find love again.

About a week ago New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey wrote: “We had the honor of accompanying John and Joy for a very special outing. On Friday, March 5, 2021 they went to the Kingston POD site where they received their final dose of the COVID vaccine.

Joy is a former Rondout, CSD schoolteacher. John a businessman and former President of Canfield Supply in Kingston.”

For most of the past year they had to “be in a bubble” because of the pandemic. Now, at last, they are vaccinated.

Pete Schultz, John’s son, was the person who observed the romance that began and blossomed during the time of COVID-19.

“They would call each other every day,” he said. “They would find a way to get together.”

“You haven’t held hands with me all day, by the way,” John said to Joy as they chatted with Steve Hartman along the banks of the Hudson River in upstate New York.

What did it take to keep their love alive, Steve asked the couple.

“A return to simple pleasures,” Joy said.

Simple pleasures like long drives to nowhere, for example, and a whole lot of selflessness.

“She bought me a walker,” John told Steve Hartman.

John also bought her “a little something,” after he popped the question many times.

“You popped the question many times?” Steve asked John..

“Dozens of times,” John replied.

Joy finally said yes.

Finally? Why? Steve pressed for an answer.

“When we had snow days this year and I didn’t come up here, I missed him,” she admitted.

That is what happens with LOVE in the time of COVID-19.

But things are changing. Winter is passing away and spring will soon be here.

And that means…..

John and Joy will be married in spring - at the end of March or the beginning of April. They have already had a rehearsal for the event.

That is the power of LOVE - even in the time of COVID-19.
