 GOD BLESS THE CHILDREN

I join with Newark public safety director Anthony Ambrose in saying thank you to the concerned teacher who requested a wellness check on a foster child in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

At 10:10 on February 10, 2021, police went to a property in the 500 block of Clinton Avenue, for a wellness check on a 12 year old boy. When they found the child, he was in a room and “tethered to a fan by chains and padlocks” according to the article by Ewan Palmer in Newsweek February 12, 2021.

He was taken to the University Hospital for evaluation. After that he was placed in the custody of the New Jersey Department of Child Protection and Permanency.

How and why was the child put in such a “horrific situation? We are pleased that he is now safe, and we are grateful that this teacher suspected that he needed police assistance.” The situation is to be thoroughly investigated.

Meanwhile a 66 year old New Jersey woman has been arrested in connection with the situation and accused of endangering a child’s welfare.

Katie Campione wrote a gut-wrenching story that was published in People on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

The headline to the story was: “Couple charged in death of malnourished daughter,7, who was not given medical treatment for years: Police.”

The child died in 2018. “For five years they allegedly fed their daughter, Omera, a diet of only French fries and did not provide her with any medical care leading to a rash all over her body.”

Omera was never vaccinated after she was 2 years old. The rash was never diagnosed by a doctor. She died on April 12, 2018. The cause of death: sepsis according to a report from the Florida Department of Children and Family Services (obtained by People).

Despite life-saving efforts by the staff, the DCF report states, she was pronounced dead at 7:34 a.m. on April 12, 2021.

Was there medical and nutritional neglect in this case? The hospital’s child protection team concluded that there was neglect. The abuse case was closed however, “with no indicators of death and not substantiated indicators of medical neglect.”

And way over in Syria a little girl was saved from deep in a well in Aleppo by a Syrian Civil Defense group known as the White Helmets Search and Rescue organization. The 8 year-old child, whose name is Sumaya, fell into the well while she was playing near her home in Al Bab city.

A video showed the dramatic rescue which took about an hour to be completed.

Fortunately, Sumaya did not suffer any injuries.

Little Ava was diagnosed with spina bifida while in her mother’s womb. “Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and the spinal cord do not form properly. It is a type of neural tube defect. The neural tube is the structure in a developing embryo that eventually becomes the baby’s brain, spinal cord, and the tissues that enclose them.”

Spina bifida can range from mild to severe, according to an article on the Mayo Clinic website.

The tiny baby had to undergo many surgeries when she was only a few months old. Some doctors had no hope that she would ever walk. Some felt she might be paralyzed.

But today little Ava is walking. She is happy and moving with the help of a stroller and her mother’s encouragement.

Wonderful!

It was cold in Rhode Island last Monday February 8, 2021 - Bitterly cold. The snow came down in buckets!

Ten-year-old Christian Stone, a fifth grader, was thinking - not about himself but about the frontline workers at the hospital (that is part of the Yale New Haven Health System). It is right across the Southwest border with Connecticut.  He had heard how they were “helping us a lot through this whole pandemic. All day every day the nurses here they deal with the pandemic,” he told WJAR TV, “and they want to get home from work.”

He and Abbey Meeker, a friend of his mother, thought “we would make it a tiny bit easier for them by cleaning off their cars for them.”

And they did just that. It was not a few cars! The two of them cleaned off “dozens of cars, in four different employee parking lots.” It could have been about 80 cars by the time they finished.

Some of the staff came out to thank them. Some even offered to pay them for the hard work they had done.

No! No! they said. It was never about money.

“We’re doing this for you guys because you’re here for us,” Abbey Meeker told them.

Young Master Stone added: “I feel like I actually helped someone out and that’s a really good feeling. We want them to be able to go home and see their family after a long day of work.”
