  THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

    On Old Scugog Road

SCUGOG is the Indian term for submerged land.

On the website “Early history of SCUGOG” we read: “The Indians, who roamed over Ontario at will not so many years ago have left behind them some very euphonic names as their everlasting epitaphs. None is more pleasing to Ontarians today than the word Scugog – the name for both the pretty lake and river and the fertile island midway up Ontario country’s eastern boundary line.”

On December 7, 2017 Ainsley Smith wrote in Featured Events in Toronto:

“This holiday season if you’re dying to see some good old fashioned Christmas lights you’re going to want to head to Old Scugog Road in Bowmanville.

“Located just over an hour from Toronto, Old Scugog Road is home to the most incredible Christmas light displays that go beyond your traditional twinkle lights.

“Picture over 100 homes decked out in not only lights but also spotlights, moving Ferris wheels, projection screens playing movies, and Santa displays that move and play music; it is truly a sight to see.”

On DURHAM Radioevents.com there is this item: This year of 2020 has been a challenging and difficult one for us all. Now more than ever is a time to come together and celebrate the festival of lights on Old Scugog Road. These lights can symbolize hope for the upcoming year of 2021. Most homes are not collecting non-perishable food items this year during the Festival of Lights but if you are able you can donate directly to Clarington East Food Bank. No donation is too small. We are all in this together, let us give hope to everyone this holiday season.”

So, for some thirty years “the most incredible Christmas light displays” have been running from December 1st to New Year’s Day.

“Every year hundreds of Durham families make a holiday tradition of visiting Bowmanville’s Old Scugog Road to take in the stunning street of holiday decorations,” Jennifer O’Meara, “Clarington This Week” reporter wrote in December 2019.

She described the dazzling display of holiday decorations: Candy Cane Lane Buttery Court, Craig Court “with a big glowing star high above two windows”, The North Pole Glenelge Court, Santa Claus Court – Maryleah Court, Taunus Court with its searchlights, Andelwood Court,(classic country Christmas) Loop of Lights - Old Scugog Court.

For the first time in my life I had the opportunity to see the wonderful holiday decorations on December 13, 2020. Dazzling? Yes. Beautiful? Yes. Inspiring? Yes.

But what is even more impressive is that a community can work together, year after year, quietly, in harmony, for the greater good of all:

for the visitors who enjoy seeing the beautiful arrangements without being harassed for donations.

and for those who are blessed with donations from the food bank.
