Seven (unexpected) Months in Peru - Jesse Takayama

                     Seven (unexpected) Months in Peru.

When Jesse Takayama, a Japanese tourist, arrived in Peru, South America, in March this year, he intended to spend just a few days there. His plan was to see the "most visited tourist destination in Peru" the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu.

Located on a mountain ridge 2,430 meters (7,970ft.) above sea level, it is the most famous symbol of the Incan empire. No one knows exactly why the Inca people built Machu Picchu. "It may have been a royal estate for Inca emperors and nobles" some say. It was founded in the Cuzco region of Peru about 1450 and abandoned in 1672. In 2007 the site was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World

Jesse Takayama was looking forward to visiting the place. He arrived in Peru, on March 14, and was due to enter Machu Picchu on March 16. But something unexpected happened. He was stranded in the town of Aguas Calientas (which is near to Machu Picchu). Why was he stranded? Because of the Coronovirus outbreak!

"Peru imposed one of the earliest and longest lock-downs in Latin America to stop the spread of coronavirus," a report on the BBC website said. The lock-down began on March 16, (but the coronovirus cases rose quickly) and it continued until the end of June.

Jesse Takayama was trapped in South America.

He was disappointed. He was very uncertain about what to do next. But instead of feeling sorry for himself Jesse interacted with the children in the town and made friends with the local people. "I had a great time here," he told CNN travel.

Just when it appeared as if Jesse would have to return to Japan without visiting Machu Picchu things turned around for him. A local tour company became involved with his situation and the national Ministry of Culture gave special permission for him to visit the site. The site's chief and two photographers accompanied him on the trip. He was the only tourist at Machu Picchu.

Jesse will leave Peru on his way back home on October 16, 2020 after a most unexpected but very enjoyable seven months in Peru.
